  • Flood waters, pastor's vision lead to new church

    COVINGTON, Va. (BP) -- There is a new church in Alleghany County, Va. -- and it happened because of a flood, a legacy and a pastor's vision.

    In June 2016, Fincastle Baptist Church, located in Fincastle, Va., just outside of Roanoke, reached out to the town of Covington after a flood that affected the area. Fincastle responded with volunteers, known as the Go Team, and developed a plan to provide furniture and appliances to flood victims. In partnership with SBC of Virginia Disaster Relief and with the help of SBCV's Vision Virginia funds, Fincastle was able to help nearly 500 families. Read More

    WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Scott Hildreth was installed April 10 as the George Liele Director of the Lewis A. Drummond Center for Great Commission Studies, the first endowed directorship at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

    The installation of Hildreth, assistant professor of global studies who has led the Drummond Center since 2009, was among the events and decisions during SEBTS trustees' April 8-10 meeting, during which the Southeastern Society of seminary supporters also met at the Wake Forest, N.C., campus.   • Livestream for MLK50 surpasses 1 million views

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- An evangelical Christian conference honoring Martin Luther King Jr. found an audience that far surpassed even the 4,000 people gathered April 3-4 at the Memphis Convention Center.

    The number of views of the conference's proceedings by live video streaming exceeded one million, The Gospel Coalition (TGC) announced April 9. By comparison, TGC's 2017 national conference recorded 57,000 livestream views, according to the organization. Read More

  • IMB presidential nominations accepted through May 15

    RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- The International Mission Board's Presidential Search Committee announced today (April 12) it is accepting nominations for the Southern Baptist entity's next president.

    The committee, chaired by Chuck Pourciau, senior pastor of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport, La., said in a statement they will accept nominations through May 15 by email at imbsearch@broadmoor.tv. Read More

  • TRUSTEES: SWBTS scholarships to aid African Americans

    FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustees affirmed the creation of 20 new scholarships for African American students during their April 10-11 meeting in Fort Worth, Texas.

    Trustees also accepted an invitation to move the seminary's Havard campus in Houston to a more strategic location and approved an overall budget of $35,947,605 for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Read More
