  • Twin sisters discover 'above, beyond' foster care

    GARDENDALE, Ala. (BP) -- When Michaela Sanderson Guthrie was 11 years old, a social services caseworker gave her an unimaginable choice -- live with a family member or enter foster care.

    "My sister looked at me and I said 'foster care.' What 11-year-old would say that? But looking back, I totally believe it was the Lord speaking through me," Guthrie said. "I knew nothing would change if we went to live with my grandmother and I didn't want that for us."

  • Archaeologists' discovery supports Bible's Gezer account

    TEL GEZER, Israel (BP) -- A discovery of ancient human remains by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary archaeologists has helped confirm Scripture's portrayal of the city of Gezer in southern Israel.

    The discovery, unearthed this summer by Southwestern's Tandy Institute of Archaeology, included remains of two adults and a child inside a building that appeared to have been violently destroyed by Egyptians in the 13th century B.C., according to media reports.   • Samford to withdraw from state conv. funding channel

    Birmingham, Ala. (BP) -- Samford University in Birmingham -- described by many as Alabama Baptists' "crown jewel" -- will no longer receive annual budget allocations from the Alabama Baptist State Convention (ABSC) after 2017.

    As of Jan. 1, 2018, the $3-plus million Cooperative Program allotment for Samford will be reduced from Alabama's CP budget, assuming the request to eliminate funding for Samford is approved by the State Board of Missions (SBOM) and convention messengers. This was a voluntary action taken by the school, Samford officials announced July 7. Read More
