  • Florida Hispanic churches suffer deaths, illness in local COVID-19 surge

    MIAMI (BP) -- In the middle of one of the highest COVID-19 surges worldwide, pastors serving Florida's hard-hit Hispanic community are suffering illnesses among their respective congregations while continuing their ministry.

    Emanuel Roque, Hispanic church catalyst with the Florida Baptist Convention (FBC), said in several Hispanic churches, pastors and some members have tested positive and are recovering. Included is El-Faro Baptist Church (Lighthouse Baptist Church) in Marathon, where many members were among a group of more than 20 who contracted the illness while attending a non-church related camp in Tennessee in June.     NASHVILLE (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention is growing in three key metrics among ethnic minority fellowships despite a continuing decline among the broader SBC, according to a report the Convention Advancement Advisory Council (CAAC) released June 24.

    Southern Baptists comprising six ethnic minority fellowships increased their churches, members, and worship attendance, but suffered declines in missions, baptisms and congregations (a category combining churches and missions), the CAAC said in its 2020 report to its membership and ethnic fellowship leaders.   • SBC race relations trailblazer Willie McPherson dies at age 80

    WICHITA, Kan. (BP) -- Willie Thomas McPherson, recognized as a trailblazer in Southern Baptist race relations and diversity, died May 12 in Wichita at the age of 80.

    McPherson pastored a predominantly white church in the 1970s in California and afterwards was the first black divisional leader within the California Southern Baptist Convention. His leadership showed blacks they could minister across racial lines and that fulltime denominational work was actually possible, said Jay Wells, a retired LifeWay Christian Resources executive.     NAPLES, Fla. (BP) -- A majority white Baptist church has apologized for 'racial prejudices' that leaders deemed partly responsible for a favored black candidate losing the Oct. 27 vote for pastor, and said it will discipline those guilty of the sin.

    The pastoral and lay leadership of First Baptist Church of Naples (FBCN) apologized to all Southern Baptists Thursday (Oct. 31) for "a sickness in what we characterize as a cancer within our fellowship" that led in part to 19 percent of the congregation voting against African American candidate Marcus Hayes. ...
