MARRIAGE NEWS: Marriage gets N.H. win

CONCORD, N.H. (BP)--Pro-family leaders in New Hampshire got a boost Tuesday when an opponent of a "gay marriage" bill won a special election for a state Senate seat.
Republican Jeb Bradley, a former member of Congress, defeated Democrat Bud Martin for the 3rd district seat, 61-39 percent. Bradley opposes "gay marriage" while Martin supports it.
Democrats still hold a 14-10 edge in the Senate, but Bradley's vote nevertheless could be critical, particularly since an unknown number of Senate Democrats are not enthusiastic about the bill, which passed in the state House 186-179. New Hampshire Democratic Gov. John Lynch says he opposes "gay marriage" but has not taken a position on the bill.
The seat was vacated when the previous senator, a Republican, resigned in February.
The Human Rights Campaign, the largest homosexual activist group in the nation, worked on the ground to try and elect Martin. The National Organization for Marriage countered by assisting Cornerstone Action PAC, a New Hampshire pro-family group, in helping citizens know where each candidate stood on the issue.
