• Meredith College trustees elect first woman president

  RALEIGH, N.C. (BP)--Maureen Hartford, vice president of student affairs at the University of Michigan, has been selected as the first woman president of Meredith College, a women’s college in Raleigh, N.C., which severed its ties with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina in 1997.

  Hartford, 50, will assume the presidency July 1, succeeding John E. Weems, who has led the 2,600-student college since 1971.
