  SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas (BP) -- Karla Holcombe, one of 26 victims to die in shootings at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs on Nov. 5, 2017, walked the lot adjacent to the church often, praying for God to provide a place for expansion. Members said the two-acre tract was too expensive.

  "You're not going to have to buy a church. God is going to give it to us," Holcombe replied.

  "God gave it to us," Mark Collins said, recalling Holcombe's story before some 350-400 gathered May 5, 2018, for groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Sutherland Springs facility. Read More

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- As discussion of domestic violence persists among evangelicals, seasoned pastors and others who minister to families are advising their ministry colleagues on what to do when they encounter physical abuse in a marriage.

• Ky. board seeks break from CBF donor churches

  LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- The Kentucky Baptist Convention Mission Board took a step May 8 toward distancing KBC churches from congregations that contribute to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a missions network they say has given an appearance of approving homosexual behavior.

  Acting on a recommendation by their Committee on Credentials, Mission Board members endorsed a recommendation that churches making financial contributions to the CBF are "no longer considered to be in cooperation" with the convention. Read More

• Currence to be re-nominated as SBC registration sec.

  DALLAS (BP) -- Don Currence, a Missouri administration and children's pastor, will be nominated for a second term as Southern Baptist Convention registration secretary, his pastor Phillip Burden announced today (May 8).

  "It is my privilege to nominate Don Currence as registration secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention," said Burden, pastor of First Baptist Church in Ozark, Mo., where Currence has served on staff 25 years. "Don exercises Christian leadership in the congregation context that reflects the character of Christ. Don serves our convention with the same fervor and commitment." Read More

  KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Jason Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, challenged graduates during the school's 63rd commencement to "guard their personal holiness and doctrinal faithfulness."

• Del. bill first to outlaw child marriage in U.S.

  DOVER, Del. (BP) -- A bill awaiting Del. Gov. John Carney's signature is America's first to outlaw marriage before age 18, the latest measure in a nationwide effort to rein in child marriage.

  Delaware's measure is the strictest to date, surpassing a Florida law passed in March to allow marriage as early as 17 when the partner is no more than two years older. Carney is expected to sign the bill as early as this week, his office has told the media, after conducting a legal review.

  Democratic Rep. Kim Williams, the bill's sponsor, is encouraging other states to follow suit. Read More
