    NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- A decade ago, it was difficult to see anything more than the devastation that accompanied Katrina as she swept across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. But looking back now, it's possible to see the triumph that emerged from the tragedy.

    After passing over the Florida panhandle as a moderate Category 1 hurricane, then weakening to a tropical storm, Katrina grew in ferocity fueled by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, growing in intensity to a 200-mile-wide Category 5 tempest. Read More

    NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- From the belly of a Coast Guard helicopter, Aviation Maintenance Technician 3rd Class Allan Campbell snapped photos of Edgewater Baptist Church days after levee breaks from Hurricane Katrina left 80 percent of New Orleans under water. The church steeple dangled on its side, its tip pointed downward into deep water.

    For Campbell, the devastation was personal. Two months earlier, he had walked his bride down the aisle on their wedding day and out through doors now submerged in water. Read More

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BP) -- A prominent Southern Baptist pastor in North Carolina died Aug. 29 in an accidental shooting in his home, according to news reports.

    Phillip M. Davis, founder and senior pastor of Nations Ford Community Church in Charlotte, reportedly was cleaning his pistol at the time of the incident in Weddington, N.C. The pistol fired, hitting his chest, the Charlotte Observer reported. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Even evangelical Christians can believe in a mythical Jesus, and that needs to be corrected, says Daniel Darling.

    "I've seen a tendency among evangelicals, including myself, to create a Jesus in our own image rather than surrendering to the Spirit's work of creating us in Christ's image," Darling told Baptist Press in an email interview. "The Scriptures present one Christ, the Christ of history, the Christ who is. I think chasing down a Jesus who looks just like us ends up with disappointment and disillusionment.   • KATRINA 2005-15: 'All we had was the spirit of God'

    NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- On the weekend before Hurricane Katrina, we had 2,051 people in worship at Celebration Church. God was blessing our ministry, and we were growing significantly.

    Then Hurricane Katrina came to New Orleans.

    Both of our campuses were inundated by the waters of Hurricane Katrina. Our largest campus on Airline Drive was hit with a seven-foot wave of water. It was under water for two and a half weeks. We lost everything at that campus. Read More
