Calif. pastor A.B. Vines to be 1st VP nomineeDALLAS (BP) -- California pastor A.B. Vines will be nominated for first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, former SBC President Johnny Hunt announced today (March 13).

Danny Wood to be SBC Pastors' Conf. nomineeDALLAS (BP) -- Danny Wood, pastor of Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., will be nominated for president of the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference, according to an announcement by Texas pastor Gregg Matte.
Matte, pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church, told Baptist Press today (March 7) Wood "has shined with integrity, love and wisdom" through more than 20 years at his current pastorate.
"With the Pastors' Conference and Southern Baptist Convention being in Birmingham for 2019, he is the right choice to lead us in his hometown," said Matte, a former Pastors' Conference president. "Most importantly, Dr. Wood understands the joys and challenges we face as pastors and will plan a conference that inspires our hearts with great theology and application." Read More
ERLC, Village Church to co-host conf. in DallasNASHVILLE (BP) -- The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and The Village Church will co-host a conference on the church's Gospel engagement with the world just prior to the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting this year in Dallas.The two-day event -- titled "The Gospel and the Future of the Church" -- will be held the weekend before the SBC's June 12-13 gathering in Dallas. Ken Hemphill to be SBC president nomineeDALLAS (BP) -- Ken Hemphill, an administrator at North Greenville University and a former Southern Baptist Convention seminary president, will be nominated for SBC president, a coalition of Southern Baptists announced today (Feb. 1) via a Baptist state paper.
"We desire to elect a man who is a Southern Baptist through and through, values our understanding of the Gospel, and, has an established record of affirming the cooperative work of our local churches through the associations, state conventions and national entities," Louisiana Baptist Convention executive director David Hankins said according to the state's Baptist Message newsjournal. Greear once again will be nominated for SBC president, Florida pastor Ken Whitten announced today (Jan. 29).

SBC 2018 Dallas theme: 'Testify! Go. Stand. Speak'DALLAS (BP) -- "Testify! Go. Stand. Speak." will be the theme for the 2018 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting June 12-13 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, SBC President Steve Gaines has announced.
Evangelism is the urgency of the theme anchored in Acts 5:20, Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, told Baptist Press today (Jan. 17).
"Fulfilling the Great Commission has always been at the heart of who Southern Baptists are," Gaines said. "However, as research from [New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary President] Chuck Kelley has shown, our baptisms are the lowest we have seen in 70 years. If we want to see that trend turn around, we must refocus our efforts on evangelism, telling a lost world about the hope that is found only in Jesus Christ." Read More
SBC evangelism task force discusses recommendationsFORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Members of the Southern Baptist Convention's evangelism task force met Dec. 5 to each share recommendations that will be considered for a final report to the SBC's 2018 annual meeting in Dallas.
The task force gathered on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for the second of three scheduled meetings. SBC President Steve Gaines appointed the task force during the SBC annual meeting in June to focus on how Southern Baptists might be more effective in personal soul winning and evangelistic preaching.
