  BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- The chairman and vice chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee were unanimously reelected during the EC's June 10 meeting in Birmingham, Ala.

  Resolutions of appreciation were approved for two SBC entity presidents, Chuck Kelley of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, who retires July 31, and Thom Rainer of LifeWay Christian Resources, who retired on Feb. 28 and for D.   NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Chuck Kelley, in his final commencement address as president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, challenged the graduates to remember that God is able to accomplish the task each is called to do.

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Frank Cox, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary trustee board chairman, updated the board on the status of the presidential search during their spring meeting, saying the committee had narrowed its focus to four top candidates.

  The search committee, led by Cox, was formed last fall after Chuck Kelley announced his intention to retire on July 31, 2019. The committee encompasses 11 voting members -- nine trustees, a faculty member and a student. Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary trustees named Chuck Kelley as chancellor of the school through July 31, 2019, and approved the accelerated M.Div. program during their fall meeting Oct. 3.

  Kelley announced his plans to retire from the school on July 31, 2019, during the Oct. 2 Founders' Day chapel service. As a result, much of the board's work at the fall meeting centered on helping Kelley finish his presidential tenure and beginning the search for the next president.

  Naming Kelley chancellor was a required step in the initiation of the presidential search process. The bylaws state that the office of president must be vacant before the trustees can initiate the search. The role of chancellor clearly indicates the seminary will continue normal operations under Kelley's leadership while the trustees seek the next leader. Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary President Charles S. "Chuck" Kelley Jr., announced his plan to retire at the end of the current academic year during Founders' Day chapel Oct. 2.

  Kelley will continue to lead the seminary through July 31, 2019.

  "This is the biggest decision of my life in a lot of ways," Kelley said in an interview. "I have been a part of almost half of the 100-year existence of NOBTS, it is very much the fabric of my whole life, and it has been a joyful, wondrous journey.

  "This is a happy decision for us," Kelley noted. "We have served the seminary in a variety of ways and are thrilled to do so now in a completely different way." Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- God's plan for reaching the world involves raising up and sending out "ordinary people" in the power of the Holy Spirit, Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear said at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Sept. 13.

  "The measure of success for any church ought not be its seating capacity" but "its sending capacity," Greear said during a chapel sermon drawn from Acts 7.

  Greear, pastor of The Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and church leaders emphasize the sending out of "ordinary people" as an essential aspect of the call to follow Jesus. As a result, the church has sent out 1,016 people to 248 Summit-sponsored church plants and to other ministries. Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Chuck Kelley's New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary chapel sermon on "the Baptist blues" was not an attack against anyone in the Southern Baptist Convention, he told Baptist Press today (Aug. 29), but an attempt to foster unity by getting "conversation on the table."

  "If people are unaware of the simmering divisions in our convention, we're never going to be able to fix them," Kelley, New Orleans Seminary's president, said in an interview. "The reality is they are there. I think not talking" through "our feelings about the convention has made some of the divisions deeper." Read More

• Kelleys' 'Great Dakota Adventure' more than vacation

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- The Dakota Badlands, a barren stretch of land once described as "a place with a long list of secrets," doesn't typically receive top billing as a vacation destination.

  But for Chuck Kelley, president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and his wife Rhonda, a trek across North and South Dakota is one they wished they had taken sooner.

  Taking their cue from the NOBTS centennial challenge to go on a mission trip this year, the Kelleys decided on a mission trip/vacation this summer, encouraging church planters with a listening ear alongside Chuck Kelley's goal to visit all 50 U.S. states. The trip allowed him to visit states 49 and 50.

  Dubbing it the "Great Dakota Adventure," the Kelleys set out to find and encourage church planters and their wives serving in out-of-the-way places. Over a meal at each stop, the Kelleys heard stories of blessing and God's faithfulness and of trial and difficulty as church planters told of what God is doing in the Dakotas. Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Baptisms in the Southern Baptist Convention have been in decline for 16 years. To change that, Chuck Kelley hopes to start a conversation.

  "The Southern Baptist Convention is facing the greatest evangelism crisis in its history, with an unprecedented gap between the number of churches and the number of baptisms those churches record," said Kelley, president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

  A new book by Kelley, "Fuel the Fire: Lessons from the History of Southern Baptist Evangelism," published by B&H Academic, examines the causes behind the longest running decline in baptisms in SBC history and what can be done to reverse it. Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- When New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary President Chuck Kelley began his day Aug. 7 he had little idea of the blessings to come: Two gifts totaling $1 million dollars for student scholarships were received that day.
