  • Charles Sullivan, former Indiana exec, dies at 88

    KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (BP) -- Charles W. Sullivan, who became the Indiana Baptist convention's executive director after 42 years in the pastorate, died Nov. 27 at his home in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 88.

    Sullivan led the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana for 12 years, retiring in 2003.

    "All my life I have prayed that God would make my final years of ministry the crown of my service for Him," Sullivan wrote a year earlier in announcing his retirement. "I truly believe He has answered that prayer." Read More

  • Indiana Baptists celebrate their 60th anniversary

    MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BP) -- The 60th anniversary of the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana was celebrated during the Oct. 8-9 annual meeting at Highland Lakes Baptist Camp with 160 messengers and 53 guests representing 80 churches across the state.

    The SCBI became the 29th convention in the Southern Baptist Convention on Oct. 3, 1958. E. Harmon Moore, elected as the SCBI's first executive secretary-treasurer, served 22 years in the position.

    The SCBI today encompasses 420 churches and church plants from the convention's initial 111 churches. Read More

  • Indiana Baptists meet at camp's new worship center

    MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BP) -- Messengers to the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana celebrated the new worship center at Highland Lakes Baptist Camp during their 2017 annual meeting there Oct. 9-10.

    In attendance were 170 messengers and 54 guests representing 84 SBCI churches and church plants across the state.

    PLAINFIELD, Ind. (BP) -- Indiana Baptists amended their bylaw regarding cooperating churches at the group's annual meeting Oct. 10–11 at the Palms Conference Center in Plainfield, Ind.

    The new State Convention of Baptists in Indiana (SCBI) rule provides "a personal and proactive approach to dealing with churches that have not met the basic requirements of being a 'cooperating church with the SCBI,'" the group reported.

    MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BP) -- Cecil W. Seagle will end five years of service as executive director of the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana on Dec. 16.

    Seagle, 76, made the announcement during the opening session of the SCBI Executive Board's Aug. 15-16 meeting at the Indiana convention's Highland Lakes Baptist Camp in Martinsville.

    Seagle was elected as SCBI executive director on Nov. 1, 2011, after serving eight months as interim executive director, a role he assumed after 22 years as the Florida Baptist Convention's missions division director. Read More
