  JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi will retire the last state flag in the U.S. with the Confederate battle emblem, more than a century after white supremacist legislators adopted the design.

  JACKSON (BP) -- Offering a "voice of healing in the name of Jesus Christ," Mississippi Baptists asked the Legislature Tuesday (June 23) to replace the state flag with a design that does not include the Confederate flag.

  National racial tension and discussions regarding the flag in recent days prompted the move, Mississippi Baptist Convention Board (MBCB) Executive Director and Treasurer Shawn Parker said in a press conference today in Jackson. Read More

  DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- For more than 70 years, the Confederate flag was a familiar sight at NASCAR races. During the civil rights era and right on through the season opener at Daytona last February, the flag dotted infield campsites and was waved in grandstands by fans young and old.

  SHELBY, N.C. (BP) -- North Carolina pastor Rit Varriale wants to see churches fly the Christian flag above the American flag as a biblical statement, reversing flag etiquette that calls for the American flag to be flown in the prominent position.

  Varriale, as senior pastor of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C., said the church installed its first-ever flagpole in order to raise the two flags in a special ceremony after morning worship on Sunday (July 5) in which the Christian flag was raised in the higher position -- which prompted interviews by Charlotte-area NBC, CBS and Fox affiliates.
