  PORT-AU-PRINCE (BP) -- Safe flights from Haiti following a violent citizen uprising have allowed most Southern Baptist mission teams to return to the U.S., Baptist Press has learned.

  Teams from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and Tennessee returned to the U.S. beginning July 9 after air travel resumed from the island nation. As recently as July 10, a team from Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Hartwell, Ga., was still awaiting a flight to return this weekend, according to Facebook posts. Read More

  PORT-AU-PRINCE (BP) -- About 200 Southern Baptists on mission were trapped in Haiti after violent riots closed airports, sources told Baptist Press, but at least one team plans to return home today (July 9).

  "The Woodland Community Church (Bradenton, Fla.) and The Glade Church (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) team arrived safely at the airport in Port-au-Prince this morning! They are scheduled to return home to the U.S later today," the Bradenton church posted on its Facebook page this morning. "Thank you for praying for this incredible group during their extended stay in Neply" about 20 miles outside of Port-au-Prince. Read More

  PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (BP) -- Florida Baptists are already onsite providing aid in Haiti, where nearly 1,000 people have died from Hurricane Matthew and scores more are sickened by cholera in the storm's aftermath.

  Craig Culbreth, the Florida Baptist Convention's lead catalyst for missions and ministries, said the state's Disaster Relief volunteers are already on the ground assessing need and strategizing response.

  BIGARADE, Haiti (BP) -- Several years ago, the Bigarade community in Port-au-Prince was just a flood plain. Now, more than a hundred homes dot the landscape, and children run down the dirt roads to their very own school.

  Earlier this year, there was a new face at the school, though one who's very familiar with its story. At nine years old, Mackenzie Howell has been working to renew hope in Haiti since 2011, when she saw a documentary about the devastating earthquake that rocked the country the previous year.   PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (BP) -- As the earth began to buckle Jan. 12, 2010, Youdel Azor recalled, "The ground was moving like someone bouncing on a trampoline."

  In 35 seconds on that scary, sad and dreadful day in Haiti five years ago, more than 230,000 people were dead from the earthquake measuring 7.0 magnitude on the Richter scale. People trapped by massive slabs of concrete cried for relief, said Azor and a group of Haitian Baptist pastors meeting in Port-au-Prince this past December. Read More

  PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (BP)--Southern Baptist rebuilding efforts in Haiti since the devastating earthquake 15 months ago have made good progress -- and the improvements are as much spiritual as physical, leaders in the effort said.

        "Rebuild Haiti," a cooperative Baptist venture to put as many as 6,200 families in decent housing by the end of 2013, has completed 796 homes, with another 130 nearing completion, said Jeff Palmer, executive director of Baptist Global Response. Haitian Baptists also are participating in the initiative as are the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief and Florida Baptist Convention.

        "In the aftermath of the earthquake, getting an effective program of rebuilding was very challenging," Palmer said. "Moving people and money into the country, assembling all the supplies needed, just dealing with the nuts and bolts of getting things done in a place devastated by the earthquake was hard. Doing it in a way that enables Haitians to stand on their own, rather than continue the dependency patterns of the past, made it even a greater challenge."

        Fritz Wilson, director of disaster relief and recovery for the Florida Baptist Convention, said the decision to use local labor and supplies has multiplied Rebuild Haiti's impact. Read More
