  • Heath Thomas to become OBU's 16th president

    SHAWNEE, Okla. (BP) -- The Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) board of trustees voted Friday (Nov. 8) to elect Heath Thomas as the university's 16th president during its fall meeting on the OBU campus in Shawnee. Thomas currently serves at OBU as the dean of the Hobbs College of Theology and Ministry and the associate vice president for church relations. He will assume the role of president in January 2020.

    In addition to his duties as dean and associate vice president, Thomas also serves as interim dean of the divisions of behavioral and social sciences and language and literature, the Floyd K. Clark Chair of Christian Leadership and professor of Old Testament. He joined the OBU faculty in 2015 after serving as director of Ph.D. studies and associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.     BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Philadelphia pastor K. Marshall Williams Sr. received Oklahoma Baptist University's Herschel H. Hobbs Award for Distinguished Denominational Service June 10 in Birmingham, Ala.

    Williams, senior pastor of Nazarene Baptist Church in Philadelphia for more than 35 years, was the 2006-2008 president of the Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey and was elected as president of the state convention presidents' fellowship in 2008. Read More

  • Whitlock transitions from OBU president to chancellor

    SHAWNEE, Okla. (BP) -- After more than a decade of service, Oklahoma Baptist University President David W. Whitlock retired Jan. 8 to serve the remainder of the academic year as chancellor.

    Whitlock will assist OBU trustees in the presidential transition and retire from university employment effective May 31, 2019.

    Will Smallwood, senior vice president for advancement and university relations, will serve as acting president of the 2,000-student university in Shawnee which is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. Read More

    ANDERSON, S.C. (BP) -- The next generation of Christian ministry leaders must embrace and nurture God's individual call on their lives before God will use them as ambassadors of the Gospel locally and globally, speakers said during "The Call" Conference held at two Baptist universities.

    Hundreds of students, from middle school through college, attended the Sept. 8 session at Anderson University in Anderson, S.C., and Aug. 25 at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.

    The two universities are part of the Call To Ministry Network aimed at encouraging and nurturing the next generation in their ministry pursuits.
