    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- The chairman and vice chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee were unanimously reelected during the EC's June 10 meeting in Birmingham, Ala.

    Resolutions of appreciation were approved for two SBC entity presidents, Chuck Kelley of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, who retires July 31, and Thom Rainer of LifeWay Christian Resources, who retired on Feb. 28 and for D. August "Augie" Boto, who served 13 months as the EC's interim president. Read More

  • Rainer: LifeWay did 'all we could' to save stores

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- LifeWay Christian Resources did "all we could" to keep brick and mortar stores open, LifeWay President Thom Rainer told the entity's trustees. But despite positive indicators in mid-2018, by late in the year, data from stores showed revenue declines "had not reversed" and "had been exacerbated."

    Rainer's comments during a Feb. 4-5 trustee meeting in Nashville came prior to approximately three hours of executive session over two days, in which business and financial matters were discussed. LifeWay has not yet announced any actions taken during the executive session. Read More

  • Rainer calls on churches to get a little scrappy

    NASHVILLE (BP) – Back in high school, LifeWay CEO and President Thom S. Rainer spent many Friday nights playing tailback for what he calls a scrappy football team.

    He noted they weren't the biggest, fastest or most athletic players, but because of the team's grit and determination, they overcame a bad season to make it into the quarterfinals of the state playoffs the following year.

    In his new book, "Scrappy Church: God's Not Done Yet," Rainer calls on churches to bring a similar mentality to revitalization -- something he believes is attainable if churches are willing to roll up their sleeves and get a little scrappy. Read More

  • LifeWay search committee now accepting nominations

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- The LifeWay Christian Resources presidential search committee is accepting nominations for a successor to Thom Rainer, chairman Kent Dacus has announced.

    The search committee met Monday, Sept. 24, to develop a process for their search of the new LifeWay president and CEO, Dacus reported.

    The committee, which is accepting nominations at LifeWayCEO@carterbaldwin.com, will work with the executive search firm CarterBaldwin to identify potential candidates. Read More

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Hopefulness for the future of the Southern Baptist Convention in a season of denominational transition was voiced by Thom Rainer, president of LifeWay Christian Resources, in a discussion Sept. 19 with Jason Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

    Titled "The State of the SBC," the discussion during Midwestern's chapel hour focused on the many significant changes facing the denomination. Among these is the need to fill four entity leadership positions within the SBC and to address a generational transition as well. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- LifeWay Christian Resources trustees began the initial steps to search for a successor to President and CEO Thom S. Rainer during their Aug. 27-28 meeting in Nashville.

    Trustee chairman Jimmy Scroggins named a seven-person search committee to find LifeWay's next leader.

    The trustees' presidential search committee will be led by Kent Dacus, vice president of student services at California Baptist University, as committee chair. Dacus is a member of The Grove Community Church in Riverside. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- LifeWay Christian Resources President and CEO Thom S. Rainer announced Monday (Aug. 27) his plans to retire in the coming year.

    To provide adequate time for the search process for the next president and CEO and for a smooth transition, Rainer said he will serve until a new president is named or through the end of August 2019, whichever comes first. Read More

    That was the question posed at the LifeWay Christian Resources breakfast attended by 1,100 registered guests during the 2018 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Dallas.

    Attendees may have been surprised to hear LifeWay President Thom S. Rainer say yes, the Southern Baptist Convention is dying. But they also heard him lay out hope for the future of the SBC as well as for local churches that also may be in decline. Read More
