    PANAMA CITY, Fla. (BP) -- When Hurricane Michael barreled through the Florida Gulf Coast last October, it transformed the ministry of First Baptist Church in Port St. Joe. No longer could the church focus on only typical everyday ministry activities.

    After Michael, half of the church's families had lost their homes. Many had to move outside the area to find work and housing. The church's own building was battered so intensely that it was no longer usable. Marriages were stressed. Long-held family heirlooms were lost forever. Read More

    MIAMI (BP) -- Under the theme "Faithful," 827 messengers representing 374 churches gathered for the 157th annual meeting of the Florida Baptist State Convention.

    They voted on business, received ministry updates and heard from fellow pastors about some of the ways God is moving to reach Florida with the Gospel through local churches.   • Church partnerships emerging after Hurricane Michael

    PORT ST. JOE, Fla. (BP) -- While Hurricane Michael brought the devastation that so often comes with a storm of its magnitude, Florida Baptists are discovering some unexpected blessings through their Churches Helping Churches initiative.

    "Our church-to-church effort is designed to identify a non-storm affected church that is willing to partner with a storm-impacted church to serve as the point of contact for coordinating recovery responses and efforts for that specific church," said Lewis Miller, the Florida Baptist Convention's west Florida regional catalyst. Churches from other states also have indicated a readiness to help.

    Many Florida Baptist churches were on high alert before Hurricane Michael even made landfall. First Baptist Church in Orange Park was among them, where lead pastor David Tarkington said he and others prayed over the church's response as the storm approached, knowing that they would probably "give and go."     TIERRA VERDE, Fla. (BP) -- On a day focused on celebrating life transformation, the Quinlan family decided to be baptized together as a symbol of how Jesus had been working in their lives. Their church, The Island Chapel in Tierra Verde, was just one of hundreds of Florida Baptist churches that participated in Acts 2:41 Beach Baptism on May 6.

    MIAMI (BP) -- The sandy beaches of Key Biscayne will serve as an inspiring picture of South Florida as people from multiple races, cultures, ethnicities and generations unite for a day of picnics and festivities at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Saturday, May 5.

  • After bridge collapse, Baptists dispatched to help

    MIAMI (BP) -- Classes resumed Monday (March 19) after the collapse of a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University in Miami left six people dead.

    The 950-ton structure was undergoing final safety testing and repairs when it plummeted to the ground, crushing cars that were traveling busy SW 8th Street, also known locally as Calle Ocho. One FIU student and a construction worker were among the dead.

    The $14.2 million bridge was to connect the campus with the neighboring Sweetwater community, home to thousands of FIU students. One student was struck last year and killed crossing the street. Read More

  • 3rd Virgin Islands crusade to continue imparting hope

    ST CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands (BP) -- Devastation and suffering among Hurricane Irma and Maria survivors in the U.S. Virgin Islands were palpable to Florida Baptist Jeffery Singletary, who led a mission trip to the islands months before the storms.

    His heart's response was a series of "Feeding the Five Thousand" crusades that reaped 620 decisions for Christ and fed thousands both spiritually and physically, Singletary, a regional catalyst with the Florida Baptist Convention, told Baptist Press. A crusade on St. Croix Jan. 28 -30 will be his third.

    "I knew they had four great needs -- food, clothing, shelter and hope," Singletary said. "Red Cross could help provide food and clothing. FEMA could help provide shelter. But only the church of Jesus Christ can provide real hope." Read More

  • Puerto Rican evacuees aided by Fla. Baptists

    ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- More than 200,000 hurricane survivors from Puerto Rico have trekked to Florida for refuge, with several Baptist churches in central Florida at the forefront of ministering to their needs.

    "The Florida Baptist Convention is excited to partner with the churches in the central Florida region as they respond to the needs of the Puerto Rican community moving into the area," said Tommy Green, the convention's executive director.

    Another 100,000 Puerto Ricans are projected to arrive in Florida in the coming months as a result of catastrophic damage from Hurricanes Maria and Irma last September across the U.S. territory. Read More
