    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BP) -- U.S. Air Force officials have suspended a decorated officer and revoked his recommendation for promotion to brigadier general because he would not sign an unofficial document affirming a retiring subordinate's same-sex marriage.

Bohannon, Air Force Inspection Agency commander at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M., signed all the requisite documents for a senior noncommissioned service member's May retirement ceremony except for one: a letter of "spousal appreciation" for the gay serviceman's partner.   • ACLU fights faith-based child placement agencies

    LANSING, Michigan (BP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is challenging a Michigan law that allows faith-based foster care and adoption agencies to operate according to their biblical convictions. The lawsuit, filed against the state Sept. 20 in federal court, could jeopardize similar laws across the nation and force faith-based agencies to close.

    The lawsuit names Bethany Christian Services and Catholic Charities, which are not defendants, as foster care and adoption agencies that turned away two married lesbian couples trying to adopt children. Read More

  • Edith Windsor, same-sex marriage pioneer, dies at 88

    NEW YORK (BP) -- Edith Windsor, a homosexual rights activist whose lawsuit prompted the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), died Sept. 12 in New York. She was 88.

    The Supreme Court's 2013 ruling in U.S. v. Windsor granted states the ability to legalize same-sex marriage and paved the way for nationwide legalization of the practice two years later in Obergefell v. Hodges. An NPR obituary called Windsor, whose cause of death has not been announced, "an octogenarian rock star in the gay rights community." Read More

  • Evangelicals counter 'agree to disagree' sexuality

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- A coalition of evangelical leaders, including about 70 Southern Baptists, has issued a statement on biblical sexuality countering the idea that Christians "should agree to disagree" in their views of homosexual practice and transgenderism.

    The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) announced today (Aug. 29) the release of The Nashville Statement, which consists of 14 affirmations and denials consistent with the church's long-held teaching on human sexuality. Read More

  • Pew: Gay marriage gains favor of younger white evangelicals

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Young white evangelicals -- both Millennials and Gen-Xers -- born after 1964 are among societal groups increasingly approving of same-sex marriage, according to new Pew Research Center figures.

    Homosexual marriage is supported by 47 percent of younger white evangelicals today, compared to only 29 percent in March of 2016, Pew said in a study conducted June 8-18 among 2,504 adults. Older white evangelicals, including Silents born before 1946 and Baby Boomers, overwhelmingly remain opposed. Only 26 percent of evangelicals in the older groups approve of the practice, comparable to the 25 percent in the 2016 study. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Four married lesbian couples in Tennessee are fighting a new state law they say denies their parental rights.

  • D.C. church's lesbian co-pastors spark 'concern'

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- A Washington D.C. church's decision to call a legally-married lesbian couple as co-pastors has led a fellow District of Columbia Baptist Convention pastor to call for "prayerful dialog" between convention leadership and the church. A Southern Baptist Convention seminary president suggested the DCBC should disfellowship the congregation.

    Meanwhile, DCBC executive director Robert Cochran told Baptist Press the convention has "no plans to disassociate" with the church and he "has never discussed the issue of homosexuality with" the congregation's leaders. Read More

    WACO, Texas (BP) -- Media reports criticizing HGTV personalities Chip and Joanna Gaines for attending a church whose pastor believes homosexuality is a sin have drawn criticism from Southern Baptist commentators as illogical and "unbecoming of the term 'news.'"
