  SACATON, Ariz. (BP) -- As soon as Eric Gibbs stepped onto the Tohono O'odham Nation, one of the largest Native American reservations in the country, he felt a love for the people there.

  "After seeing the needs of that community, I knew my time in Arizona would be more than just a week," Gibbs said of the short-term mission trip he took as a college student, a trip he didn't think much about beforehand.

  Gibbs returned home to finish his degree and continue his service as a youth minister. But he and his wife Brittany began to pray about relocating to Arizona for long-term ministry. Read More

  COLUMBUS, Ohio (BP) -- A church plant in Oklahoma City has taken on the responsibility of starting a church in Tucson, Ariz., both in a Native American context.

  "We promote the work of the Southern Baptist Convention," said Emerson Falls, pastor of Circle of Life in Oklahoma City and president of the Fellowship of Native American Christians, which meets each year in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention. Read More

  PEMBROKE, N.C. (BP) -- In 1881, Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, an association of Native American Baptist churches, was established. From its humble beginnings of three churches in Robeson County, N.C. -- two of which still exist -- the association now includes 70 churches in 10 North Carolina counties and two neighboring states.

  Coharie, Haliwa-Saponi, Lumbee, Pee Dee, Tuscarora and Waccamaw Siouan make up the multi-tribal association's membership, which was distinctively Baptist from its beginning. Read More
