  SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas (BP) -- Church shootings like the massacre at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, will not intimidate the body of Christ, according to a Washington Post op-ed by Southern Baptist ethicist Russell Moore. Congregations that have experienced shootings are offering testimony to support his assertion.

  "The goal the gunman sought, to terrorize worshipers, has been attempted constantly over the centuries around the world by cold, rational governments and terrorist groups -- all thinking that they could, by the trauma of violence, snuff out churches, or at least intimidate those churches into hiding from one another," Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, wrote in a Nov. 6 op-ed.   WASHINGTON (BP) -- Americans, including conservative Christians, should seek to persuade others -- not pigeonhole them by classifications -- to promote civility in a religiously diverse culture, Southern Baptist leader Russell Moore said in a Washington, D.C., panel discussion.

  Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, spoke during a Sept. 13 event hosted by The Brookings Institution on the role of religious freedom in building public civility.

  The American Charter Project (ACP) sponsored the program in an effort to offer guidance on how to overcome polarization in the United States along ideological and religious divides. ACP will release the "American Charter of Freedom of Religion and Conscience" later this year as part of its effort. Read More

Page could ask Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission President Russell Moore to resign amid ongoing controversy, the two SBC entity leaders reported a collegial meeting March 13 and said they "fully support one another."

  LAUREL, Md. (BP) -- The president of a network of some 4,000 predominantly African American Southern Baptist churches has issued an open letter urging reconciliation between Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission President Russell Moore and those threatening to withhold Cooperative Program money over his actions.

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- Controversy surrounding ethicist Russell Moore's past comments on President-elect Donald Trump has led three Tennessee Baptists -- all under the age of 40 -- to issue an open letter calling "the [conservative] resurgence generation and their protégés" to "be the statesmen we need them to be in this season of denominational tension."
