    LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. apologized Monday (June 8) for a tweet that included a racist photo that appeared on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's medical school yearbook page decades ago.

    "After listening to African American LU leaders and alumni over the past week and hearing their concerns, I understand that by tweeting an image to remind all of the governor's racist past I actually refreshed the trauma that image had caused and offended some by using the image to make a political point," he tweeted Monday.     BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (BP) -- "The Reconciliation Conversation," a podcast aimed to "encourage love, expose hate, equip for reconciliation and emphasize unity, so that red and yellow and black and white can know our value together," debuted its first episode Wednesday (June 3).

    The podcast, co-hosted by Jason Dukes, church multiplication minister at Brentwood Baptist Church in Brentwood, Tenn., and Derrick DeLain, pastor of the soon-to-be-launched Proclamation Church plant in Nashville, features conversations about racial unity, the Gospel, and the role Christians have to play in cultivating a culture in which people value each other.     NASHVILLE (BP) -- In his plenary address during the SBC Executive Committee meeting Feb. 17, Southern Baptist Convention president J.D. Greear called EC members to unity in order to continue to focus on "Gospel Above All," his choice of theme for the 2020 SBC Annual Meeting in June -- just as it was for the 2019 SBC Annual Meeting.

    Saying his goal has been to see the Gospel mission become the defining reality of the SBC, Greear challenged them on matters of sex abuse prevention, racial reconciliation, Gospel focus, Cooperative Program efforts and missional resurgence. Read More

  • Black, white Nashville churches remember shared history

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Nashville First Baptist Church was willed an enslaved 16-year-old Nelson G. Merry in 1840, and by 1853 had baptized, discipled, freed and ordained him to pastor the First Colored Baptist Mission, a First Baptist church plant.

    That church plant became First Baptist Church Capitol Hill, a majority black Nashville congregation led by senior pastor Kelly Miller Smith Jr. He participated Sunday (Feb. 16) in Nashville First Baptist's yearlong bicentennial celebration, preaching the morning sermon and answering questions on race relations and civil rights during a luncheon afterward.     ANCHORAGE, Alaska (BP) -- It's significant that the National Register of Historic Places now honors Greater Friendship Baptist Church as the first church founded by blacks on Alaskan soil, its pastor Michael Bunton told Baptist Press Friday (Feb. 7).

    But Bunton has a broader vision for the church distinguished as the first black Southern Baptist congregation -- at least since the 19th century -- when it was founded in 1951. Read More

    PORTSMOUTH, Va. (BP) -- Longtime pastor Jack Stallings determined years ago to empathetically view life from the eyes of a black Christian, a feat he says he hasn't quite achieved, being he's white.

    "A person that has helped me tremendously with that, and has probably been the single greatest contributor to whatever ability I have to be able to do that, is Rev. Lee," Stallings said of Robert Lee, installed Sunday (Aug. 18) as the senior pastor of Collinswood Agape Baptist Church, a merger of Stallings' and Lee's previous Portsmouth, Va., pastorates.
