    FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- "In light of recent events," Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's board of trustee chairman has announced the board will hold a special meeting May 22.

    The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. that day on the seminary's campus in Fort Worth, Texas, according to a statement released by trustee chairman Kevin Ueckert. The release was prepared on Saturday (May 5), Ueckert noted, but it was embargoed until worship services in many Southern Baptist churches had drawn to a close on Sunday evening. Read More

    FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Amid ongoing discussion of statements by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson on domestic violence, Patterson and the executive committee of the seminary trustees have issued a statement affirming "the importance of protecting victims of abuse."

    Meanwhile, at least five Southern Baptist Convention entity presidents have made statements on domestic violence since April 29.     FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Paige Patterson has clarified his view on domestic violence and voiced regret "that the way I expressed that conviction has brought hurt."

    Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, issued a written statement Sunday (April 29) amid discussion on social media of an audio clip from 2000 in which he said the proper response of a wife to domestic abuse "depends on the level of abuse to some degree." Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- A new series of theology resources conveying a distinctly Baptist perspective has been launched by B&H Academic.

    The new series, "A Treasury of Baptist Theology," is edited by Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Jason G. Duesing, provost and associate professor of historical theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

    "With plans for over two dozen volumes, this series will feature the work of Baptist theologians and church leaders on a wide range of topics written from a Baptist perspective," Duesing said. "The vision for the series comes from Paige Patterson, and I count it an honor to join him as the 'Treasury of Baptist Theology' series editors." Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- A 1987 debate on Christ's atonement between Paige Patterson and then-New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary theology professor Fisher Humphreys may have had "greater significance" in the Southern Baptist Convention's Conservative Resurgence than some have thought.

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- "A remarkable number of young women" are enrolling at Southern Baptist Convention seminaries, according to a report delivered this week to the SBC Executive Committee.

    Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson, in reporting to the EC Sept. 18, said female SBC seminary graduates are helping to fulfill a need in churches for "strong female Bible teachers."     FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Evan Lenow and Candi Finch from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s faculty were among 50-plus speakers at the 10th World Congress of Families in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia.

    In a “Tbilisi Declaration,” the congress warned that “a titanic contest over the nature of society and the fate of children … has now come to a head.”

    “On the one side are gathered the forces combining revolution with retrogression, novelty with depravity, and cries of liberation with a new slavery,” the declaration pointed out. “This movement elevates sexual desire and atomistic individualism to the highest of human values. It denies any natural order to human life. And it degrades children into nuisances or tools to serve adult ends. Read More
