  • ERLC to aid pro-life cause in Northern Ireland

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission announced Thursday (Feb. 27) a new initiative to help churches in Northern Ireland in their response to the legalization of abortion in that country.

    Abortion became legal Oct. 22, 2019, for the first time in Northern Ireland's history, and the country's new abortion regulations will take effect April 1. The British Parliament approved an amendment in July to decriminalize abortion in the country, which is part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland's legislative body -- which had not functioned for three years because of the deep division between the country's two political parties -- failed to block the new law by the October deadline.   • Efforts to protect born, unborn babies fail in Senate

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The U.S. Senate failed again Tuesday (Feb. 25) to approve protections for unborn babies late in their mothers' pregnancies and newborns who survive abortions.

    Supporters of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act fell short in afternoon attempts to bring the proposals to the Senate floor. They needed 60 votes to invoke cloture, as the procedural move is known, and proceed to a roll call on passage of the bills. Read More

  • Senate prepares to act on two pro-life bills

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Pro-life advocates in the U.S. Senate will try again Feb. 25 to gain passage of protections for unborn babies late in their mothers' pregnancies and newborns who survive abortions -- something they have been unable to do the last two years.

    The Senate will seek to bring the measures -- the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act -- to the floor for a vote on final passage. Supporters will need 60 votes to invoke cloture, as the procedural move is known, and proceed to a roll call on approval of the bills.   • House drops deadline for ERLC-opposed ERA

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to rescind a deadline established nearly 50 years ago for a constitutional amendment a Southern Baptist Convention entity says would threaten the sanctity of human life and freedom of conscience.

    The House voted 232-183 in an almost party-line roll call to remove the deadline set by Congress in 1972 for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), a controversial proposal that failed to gain ratification by three-fourths of the states in the allotted time. When Congress approved the ERA, it established a seven-year deadline for ratification by the states. Congress later extended the deadline three more years, but proponents achieved passage in only 35 of the 38 states needed before time expired in 1982. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Southern Baptist ethicist Russell Moore has commended Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee's multi-faceted proposal to protect unborn children.

    Lee reiterated during his State of the State address Feb. 3 his intention to present legislation to the Tennessee legislature that would prohibit an abortion when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks.     MESQUITE, Texas (BP) -- Josiah Presley, one of the abortion survivors featured in a 30-second ad that Fox Sports chose not to run during the Super Bowl, is a Criswell College graduate and a youth pastor at Galloway Avenue Baptist Church in Mesquite, Texas.

    "Can you look me in the eye and tell me that I shouldn't be alive?" Presley asks in the ad made by Faces of Choice. The group's founder said she repeatedly met additional terms set forth by Fox and in the end was not given a suitable reason why the ad was rejected. Read More

  • ERLC, others applaud HHS pro-life notice to California

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Religious freedom and pro-life advocates have praised a Trump administration action putting on notice the state of California for its imposition of insurance mandates that require even churches to provide abortion coverage.

    The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Jan. 24 it had notified California it was guilty of violating federal conscience protections in requiring abortion coverage by all health insurance plans and issuers. The HHS Office of Civil Rights informed the state it has 30 days to demonstrate its intent to comply or risk restrictions on funding from the department. Read More

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Evangelical Christians primarily have the Gospel to offer within a pro-life movement that should transcend politics in what will be a battle far into the future, Southern Baptist ethicist Russell Moore said Jan. 23 on the eve of the March for Life.

    Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), told those gathered for the fifth annual Evangelicals for Life (EFL) event the great resource they have as pro-lifers "is not a stack of polling data.
