  • American Girl, Starbucks prompt 'boycott' news

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- As retailers open the Christmas shopping season, One Million Moms is calling for a boycott of American Girl products and the parent company Mattel, because American Girl Magazine's November/December cover features a gay couple and its four adoptive children.

    The morality watchdog group's call comes even as various media outlets report that some Christians are opposed to the new Starbucks holiday cup, although no Christian group has been specifically identified as calling for a Starbucks boycott. Instead, Christians have decried news of a boycott of the coffee chain. Read More

    NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Joseph Somkhith* understands the plight of today's 60 million refugees. He once lived as one.

    Somkhith was 10 years old when he and his brother fled Laos after a communist takeover in the mid-1970s. The two boys crossed the Mekong River into Thailand, facing what Somkhith described as "insecurity and violence" along the way. Nearly a year later, Somkhith's family was reunited in a refugee camp in Thailand. Read More

  • In Nepal, fuel crisis hinders quake recovery

    KATHMANDU, Nepal (BP) -- A new, man-made disaster is complicating efforts to help Nepalis recover from the devastating earthquake that struck the country in April.

    Ongoing protests over Nepal's new constitution have shut down the main road between India and Nepal since Sept. 24. The road is the main supply line for fuel and food into Nepal. Nepal claims that India instituted a blockade along the border. News reports say dozens of fuel trucks are stranded at the border. Read More
